ACTIRI CLIMATE CHANGE AGENDA
The African Center for Transport, Infrastructure, and Regional Integration (ACTIRI) is a non-governmental, non-profit Think Tank committed to advancing sustainable development of Green Transport and Infrastructure in Africa with a major focus on achieving a green integrated Africa in accordance with the aspirations of Africa Union Agenda 2063 Net-Zero Emissions by 2050. ACTIRI is keen on championing the green development and operations of transport and infrastructure sectors of; roads, railways, ports, airports, energy, water and sanitation, ICT, Urbanization and Industrialisation among others.
As a leading think tank committed to spearheading sustainable development across Africa, Within the context of our think tank’s mission, we place significant emphasis on addressing climate change, sustainability and recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities this poses for the African continent. Our focus revolves around urban transport, freight, green logistics, climate change, and actively contributing to Africa’s commitment to achieving the Net-Zero emission 2050 goal and extends to championing for gender inclusivity in sustainability within these sectors.
Integration of AU Agenda 2063 and Global NZE 2050
Currently, Africa is the least-integrated continent, physically and economically where intra-African imports currently account for only 17 percent of Africa’s trade. Africa’s mounting infrastructure deficit causes stunting growth estimated at 2% per annum. Infrastructure deficit in Africa equally causes diminishing business opportunities by 40% per anum. Aligned with the aspirations of AU Agenda 2063, specifically Aspiration 2, ACTIRI is at the forefront of driving a green agenda for an integrated continent, politically united under the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the vision of Africa’s Renaissance. Our commitment extends to supporting the development of world-class transport and infrastructure, industrialisation, facilitating trade, and achieving ambitious targets, including growing intra-African trade from less than 17% in 2023 to nearly 50% by 2045, and elevating Africa’s share of global trade from 2% to an impressive 12% while paying greater context to sustainability within various sectors.
In tandem with these goals, ACTIRI actively contributes to the realization of the global Net-Zero emissions by 2050, emphasizing sustainable transport and infrastructure practices across Africa. Our initiatives encompass sustainable transport systems across Africa involving railway networks, roads, shipping lines, sea and air transport, as well as robust ICT and digital economy development, industrialisation and resilient urbanization. In road transport which is the dorminant mode, ACTIRI pays special attention to; (i) promotion of zero emission based modes of urban transport such as NMT modes and electric mobility in African cities and (ii) transport Corridors like the Lagos – Abidjan, Central Corridor, Northern Corridor, Maputo Corridor and LAPSSET Corridor including the Tangier – Cassablanca node among many others. We envision a continent seamlessly connected through a Pan-African transport network, fostering manufacturing, skills development, technology, research and development, integration, intra-African trade, investments, and tourism.
Operating within Africa, ACTIRI is dedicated to amplifying the voices of communities and stakeholders impacted by climate change. We work towards fostering a collective approach to finding innovative solutions that contribute to the continent’s sustainable development goals while ensuring the active participation and well-being of local populations.
Promoting Climate Change Adaptation through Research and Participatory Approaches
As a think tank, ACTIRI recognizes the urgency of addressing these climate-related challenges and their intersections with the transport and infrastructure sectors. Climate change mitigation and adaptation are central tenets of our think tank’s initiatives. Through research, knowledge sharing, advocacy, capacity building and collaborative projects, we strive to develop and promote sustainable practices within transport and infrastructure sectors that not only reduce carbon footprints but also enhance the resilience of infrastructure in the face of climate uncertainties.
